If you're in a bind this will get you close, but don't expect perfection. The fact that you'll most likely be using a square flat on the end of a pair of calipers, while engaging the radius of the bearing bore means it will never be perfect. I measured 10 times and got 8 different measurements. They were all within a few thousandths of one another so I averaged them and went with what I got. I never got what I felt was an acceptable pattern so I ordered the puck style tool to get accurate measurements.

Only for aftermarket gear setup. Doesn’t work with factory gears. They should put that in the product description!!
OK one

I guess the idea is sound, it's just this tool doesn't allow it to be executed well. Let me start by saying I've installed R&P gears before. I had the proform tool which always worked well but I sold it after I stopped working on cars. Now I'm back into it and wanted to save a few bucks. As for the tool, first, the white pin that fits into the dimple on the pinion head is too long so there is no way to hold the tool flush to the pinion. That right there throws everything out of whack. Second, there is no real way to be sure that your caliper pin is contacting the bearing race journal in the correct spot. I had to take three or four measurements and never got the same one twice. Needless to say, It took four measurements and averaged them, pressed the bearing and installed everything. After installing the carrier and setting the correct backlash, the paint pattern was way off and now I have to take it all apart and try again. I ordered the real deal pinion depth tool and tossed this. Sorry Ratech, it just doesn't work.
